Moving day without the overwhelm

Moving boxes and a suitcase in a sunny bedroom

July 2026

Moving is hard for anyone. For an adult who has spent decades in the same house, leaving it can be the biggest change of their life. Go slower than feels necessary.

Before the move

  • Visit more than once. First for an hour, then for a meal, then maybe for an afternoon.
  • Meet the housemates before moving day, not on it.
  • Keep the person in every conversation about the move. It is their move.

The first night

Bring the bedding they already sleep in, unwashed. Familiar smells matter more than fresh sheets. Set up photos, the same alarm clock, the same charger in the same spot. The goal is a room that already feels lived in.

The first month

  • Keep routines identical where you can: same day program, same church, same Sunday phone call.
  • Expect a dip. Homesickness around week two is normal, not a sign the placement failed.
  • Visit, but let the new home do its work too. A person needs room to build a life you are not managing.

And ask the provider how they handle transitions. A provider who does this often will have a specific answer ready.

Come see the home behind the advice.

Tour the house, meet the staff, stay for coffee. Tours by appointment, weekends included.
